Zimbabwe’s attorney-general said on Thursday that only whites who had acquired permanent residence status and renounced British citizenship would be allowed to vote in parliamentary elections next month, news reports said.
“Their (whites) right to vote is not taken away. They can vote if by 31 December, 1985 they had acquired permanent residence status and had renounced their British citizenship,” Attorney-General Patrick Chinamasa told the high court in Harare.
The MDC’s advocate Erik Morris asked the court to issue a declaration, reaffirming that anyone eligible - be they British citizens or not - had a right to vote. “The voters’ roll has been manipulated. There are people who are going to be denied the right to vote,” Morris said.
