The leader of Guinea-Bissau’s former junta, General Ansumane Mane, was received on Saturday by Mauritanian President Maouya Ould Sid’Ahmed Taya, but no statement was made to the media after their meeting, according to AFP.
However, the news agency reported well-informed sources as saying that xenophobia against Mauritanians in Bissau was a main issue discussed.
Guinea-Bissau’s government announced at the start of May that foreign dealers in cashew nuts, the country’s main export, would have to pay to the state a fee nine times as high as that paid by their local counterparts. Mauritanian traders protested against the move, provoking expressions of xenophobia in Bissau, AFP said.
