Regular humanitarian flights to south and east

The UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) has decided to establish regular helicopter flights for humanitarian workers to the southern towns of Bo, Moyamba and Pujehun and to Kenema in the east, UNHCR Spokesman Ron Redmond reported on Friday in Geneva.

It is still too dangerous to travel by road to the interior of the country, Redmond added.

Before the latest fighting began in early May, UNHCR had been preparing for the repatriation of nearly 300,000 Sierra Leonean refugees from Guinea and 100,000 from Liberia.

UNHCR had planned to repatriate 77,000 Sierra Leoneans from Guinea this year and another 150,000 next year but these plans are temporarily on hold, Redmond said.
