Two Nigerians were killed and another was wounded following an attack on Sunday night on a UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) post in Freetown, according to UN Spokesman Fred Eckhard, who said the attack was being investigated.
Despite the attack, the overall security situation in Sierra Leone was calm, Eckhard said on Monday.
There were also unconfirmed reports of the Sierra Leone Army repelling a rebel attack on Sunday at Rogberi Junction.
Meanwhile humanitarian sources in Sierra Leone say that despite an apparent calm, the RUF is believed to be consolidating its positions and continuing voluntary and forced recruitments.
The rebels are thought to be moving between Makeni and Port Loko, digging trenches outside Rogberi and in the Kambia area and gathering forces in Kailahun. [All these localities are in the north, except Kailahun, which is in the east.]
Meanwhile, the British High Commission said on Friday that one of its nationals has been missing since 10 May. According to news reports he was thought to have visited the town of Songo where there have been recent clashes and there are fears that he may have been detained by the RUF.
