A United States senator is blocking the approval of US funding to four UN peacekeeping operations, including MONUC, news agencies reported on Saturday. The Associated Press (AP) quoted a spokesman for Republican Senator Judd Gregg as saying that the senator believed it was “unfair” for US taxpayers to pay for part of the UN operations in the DRC, as well as for those in Kosovo, East Timor and Sierra Leone. Gregg, chairman of the senate subcommittee that handles State Department spending, said he would keep the money on hold at least until the situation in Sierra Leone had changed, AP reported. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright last week said that legislators who were denying funds for the four UN missions were “making a grave mistake,” AP reported.
