Invasions threaten fertilizer industry

News reports said on Monday that layoffs were looming in the fertilizer industry as business has been crippled by the current invasions of commercial farms. ‘The Standard’ said that companies had tonnes of fertilizer which could not be bought or delivered because of the farm invasions.

It said few farmers were buying fertilizer as they were scaling down operations. “We are sitting on loads of fertilizer. Farmers are not forthcoming and we suspect this is because of the invasions,” a farmer was quoted as saying.

“If things continue as they are, then companies might be forced to scale down and inevitably lay off some workers. Commercial farmers are our biggest customers and a downturn in their operations would naturally have an impact on our business,” he said.
