Zimbabwe’s Registrar-general Tobaiwa Mudede said this week that Zimbabweans living outside of the country will not vote in parliamentary elections scheduled for 24 and 25 June.
The ‘Financial Gazette’ said Mudede told a meeting on Tuesday that the government had decided it would be too expensive to facilitate the registration of Zimbabweans living abroad. It is estimated that there are about one million Zimbabweans who live abroad, most of whom are in South Africa.
Mudede also said a decision has still to be taken whether to allow postal votes. This would affect the estimated 11,000 Zimbabwean soldiers fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on the side of President Laurent-Desire Kabila against a rebellion supported by Rwanda and Uganda.
