War veterans leader sentenced

Chenjerai Hunzvi, the leader of Zimbabwe’s liberation war veterans who have been occupying white-owned farms since February, was on Friday handed a three-month suspended sentence and a fine of US $263 for contempt of court after ignoring orders to evict the invaders.

News reports quoted Judge David Bartlett said he would have jailed Hunzvi, but had decided against this because of Hunzvi’s engagement in talks with the Commercial Farmers Union (CFU) to end the occupation of more than 100 farms.

Hunzvi was found guilty last month of contempt of court the CFU was granted an order that the farms occupations were illegal.
