International donors, meeting in New York this week, pledged over US$ 33 million to support the CAR’s security and development efforts, a UN statement said. The meeting - held at UN Headquarters on Monday and Tuesday, and sponsored by the UN Department of Political Affairs, UNDP and the German government - aimed to raise funds for government programmes to restructure its defence and security forces, as well as to demobilise and reintegrate military personnel. CAR Prime Minister Georges-Anicet Dologuele led his country’s delegation to the meeting. The statement noted that the UN Security Council had called on the government to complete initial steps to demobilise and reintegrate retired military personnel. The CAR is recovering from a period of civil strife marked by a series of army mutinies in 1996-97.
