Militant youths demanding work in the southeast Nigerian state of Rivers have forced the French oil company Elf Aquitaine to suspend its operations, news organisations reported on Wednesday.
According to the BBC, Elf officials said youths from the Elele community closed down the Olo flow station and called for employment, contracts and local infrastructure. The refinery produces 5,000 barrels of oil a day in a joint venture with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
An Elf official, quoted by the BBC, said the company had done much for the local community in the way of social amenities and scholarships.
