Claims early victories in ground and air attacks

A statement from the Ethiopian government claimed early victories on the Mereb River (western) front, saying its forces had “overrun several rows of trenches that were significant to the Eritrean troops and various strategic positions. It describes the area as “stretching from the Tekezie to the Mereb River”. Military engagements at the Zela Ambessa-Egala and Bure fronts were mainly heavy artillery exchanges, with the Ethiopian air force playing “a major and crucial role by penetrating enemy territory and attacking strategic targets”.

In previous battles, unverifiable statements from both sides claiming detailed victories have been a feature of a relatively static but bloody war.
