Police, army fight clash in diamond region

A fire fight between army commandos and riot police in a town in eastern Angola left two commandos dead and forced civilians to flee to the bush, a local politician was quoted by AFP as saying on Thursday.

Eduardo Kwananga, leader of the opposition Party for Social Renewal, said party officials in the town of Saurimo told him the shooting began late on Tuesday and continued through Wednesday morning. Saurimo, about 700 km east of the capital, Luanda, is in a lucrative diamond-mining region. The clash followed an incident in the market when a policeman shot dead a soldier who had stolen food.
