MLC official visits Bangui

MLC Secretary-General Olivier Kamitatu last week visited Bangui, the capital of Central African Republic (CAR) to convey a message from Bemba to the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who was visiting the city. He also met CAR leaders, according to an MLC announcement. CAR President Ange-Felix Patasse last week said he was neutral in the DRC war and that both Bemba and President Laurent-Desire Kabila were his friends. In the message to Annan, Bemba deplored Kinshasa’s “refusal” to engage in an inter-Congolese dialogue, its alleged use of Interahamwe militiamen in Equateur province and its arrest of opposition figures. “The MLC is impatiently awaiting implementation of the UN plan to neutralise, disarm, billet and return to their respective countries these armed groups which constitute a lasting danger for peace and stability in Africa,” the statement said.
