The Goma-based rebel Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD), meanwhile, said the general hospital in Kisangani, the radio-television building and other structures had been damaged in Friday’s fighting. In a statement, received by IRIN, RCD spokesman Kin-Kiey Mulumba said at least 7,000 Ugandan soldiers had launched the “inexplicable attack”. He claimed the troops had been arriving from Lisala, Bumba, Buta, Beni and Butembo over the days preceding the assault. “The RCD vigorously denounces and condemns the warlike behaviour of the Ugandan military hierarchy... it calls on the international community to stop the barbarism in Kisangani carried out by the UPDF,” the statement said.
