Zambian peacekeepers captured by Sierra Leone rebels were “lured” into a trap, Defence Minister Chitalu Sampa said in a brief television address on Sunday.
He said the Zambian and Kenyan troops being held hostage were called to peace negotiations by a commander of the Revolutionary United Front to discuss an outbreak of fighting in Makeni, eastern Sierra Leone. Outnumbered, the 208 Zambian soldiers were surrounded and disarmed. Zambia has a contingent of 775 UN peacekeepers in the country.
