New political party formed

A former independent presidential candidate in Bissau has set up a new political party, the Alianca socialista da Guine (ASG-Socialist Alliance of Guinea-Bissau), news organisations reported.

Fernando Gomes, who also headed Guinea-Bissau’s human rights league, told the press that the ASG, formally recognised on Thursday as the country’s 15th political party, would be a force of “constructive opposition,” according to AFP.

He told the ‘Diario de Bissau’ newspaper that nothing had changed since the new government, led by President Kumba Yala, came to power in November, adding that “after only 90 days in office, the public is in complete disarray,” PANA reported.

Yala defeated Malam Bacai Sanha, the caretaker president appointed by the military junta after ousting former president Nino Vieira in May 1999, in a run-off election in January.
