Kabila signs deal with UN

The UN has reached agreement with the DRC authorities over the planned deployment of a 5,500-strong peacekeeping force for the country. Speaking after a meeting in Kinshasa with President Laurent-Desire Kabila, the US ambassador to the UN, Richard Holbrooke, who is leading a Security Council mission on a regional tour, hailed the accord as a major step forward. The “status of forces agreement” reportedly guarantees security and freedom of movement for the UN personnel. In the past, the DRC government has been reluctant to give guarantees to about 100 UN monitors already in the country.

Holbrooke told Gabonese one of the aims of the mission was to show the Congolese people and government that the UN and international community “want to assist the Congolese in restoring peace”.
