“Very serious” situation in Kisangani, rebels say

Rwandan-backed rebels have warned of a “very serious” situation developing in Kisangani, the capital of Province Orientale. In a statement, received by IRIN on Friday, the Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD-Goma) said Ugandan troops were converging on the town from all sides “in a bid to surround it”. The statement, signed by RCD Second Vice-President Moise Nyarugabo, claimed Uganda had redeployed three battalions in Kisangani on 26 March, despite agreement between Rwanda and Uganda that the town should be declared “neutral” after their troops clashed there last August. The statement accused the Ugandan army of trying to secure the town of Kisangani for the “minority faction” of rival RCD leader, Ernest Wamba dia Wamba.
