President slams report

    JOHANNESBURG

    Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has lashed out at being included in this year’s list of “10 Enemies of the Press” issued by the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists. In a statement he said it was “not only absurd, but unfair given the arguments upon which the choice is based.”

    The CPJ report alleged that journalists in Angola “are often beaten by pro-government thugs or sentenced to prison and hit with enormous fines for defaming government officials.” It added that mentioning UNITA or detailed coverage of the civil war had almost become a criminal offence.
