Nigeria’s government announced on Wednesday a 25-percent reduction in the charge for installing a telephone line and a review of the cost of international and domestic rates to reduce them by between 25 and 50 percent for off-peak calls, ‘The Guardian’ reported.
The installation of a new telephone landline will now cost N15,000 (US $150) against the current N20,000 charged by the state-run telecommunications company, NITEL, the daily reported Information Minister Jerry Gana as saying.
Nigeria has a poor record for access to telecommunications with only 500,000 lines in a country of more than 120 million people, around four lines per 1,000 people, AFP reported the government as saying.
