President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique on Wednesday appealed to international donors to help Mozambicans rebuild their lives after the devstating floods earlier this year.
Speaking at the opening of a two-day international donor conference in Rome, Chissano said: “We need your assistance in order to strengthen our capacity for prevention and management of natural disasters. We are committed to using effectively and rationally the resources you provide for the post-emergency programme of reconstruction.”
Chissano also appealed to international creditors to write off Mozambique’s debt so that it could be allowed to spend its money on poverty alleviation. Chissano said that all the past achievements “had been dashed by the floods” and that “the projected economic growth between 8 and 10 percent in 2000 will be difficult to achieve.”
