Kabila’s close aide arrested

Raphael Ghenda, the secretary-general of the People’s Power Committees, set up by President Kabila to mobilise the population against rebels in the east, was arrested on Monday, Radio France Internationale reported. Ghenda was the minister for information until the 1997 cabinet reshuffle, when he was dropped and arrested on corruption charges. RFI on Tuesday reported that the likely reasons for his arrest were infighting within the leadership of the People’s Power Committees and misappropriation of funds.
