Zimbabwean police on Tuesday released an Associated Press photographer, who was detained for questioning last week after a bomb exploded outside the offices of an independent newspaper.
The news agency said Obed Zilwa had been freed and allowed to leave the country.
“Security forces arrested Zilwa, a highly regarded South African photojournalist, on Wednesday (last week) and accused him of bombing Zimbabwe’s only independent daily newspaper on April 22. Zilwa, who had photographed the damage caused by the blast, repeatedly said he was innocent,” it said. “His arrest was widely seen as an attempt to intimidate the foreign press.” Zilwa, who is based in Cape Town, said he was not mistreated.
