Catholic Archbishop condemns the violence

As fresh farm invasions were launched at the weekend, Archbishop Pius Ncube of Matabeleland accused the government of arming war veterans and their followers “to increase the violence”.

The remarks, described as some of the most outspoken by the church so far, were made in a pastoral letter in which he said the “lawless invasions” led by independence war veterans had also resulted in many people being “forced” to settle on farms.

“We see anarchy growing in the country,” he said. “We deplore the government’s use of power to maintain its position.”
