Opposition seeks legal action over police clampdown

    JOHANNESBURG

    Zimbabwe's main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said on Friday that was holding "emergency talks" to discuss a possible legal challenge to the police clampdown on political activity.

    "I believe we are going in the direction of an urgent Supreme court application to have this law struck off," Learnmore Jongwe, MDC spokesman was quoted in news reports saying.

    On Thursday police chief Augustine Chihuri said that he had invoked special powers to "restrict political activity in the face of spiralling violence".
