The Catholic Church in eastern DRC has accused the rebel RCD-Goma of going against its word by not allowing the return of Bukavu archbishop Emmanuel Kataliko to his diocese. Radio France Internationale on Thursday quoted Bishop Guama Anga of Bukavu as saying: "We are still waiting for the release of Mgr. Kataliko. The rebels gave their word and told several journalists that they were just working on the procedure, but since then
nothing has been heard."
The RCD's head of security and intelligence Bizima Karaha told IRIN on Friday the situation was "not yet conducive" for the archbishop's return. "He created a poisonous atmosphere by preaching ethnic hatred and we are trying to sort it out," Karaha said. Kataliko was prevented from entering Goma on his way from the capital Kinshasa, and has been living in his home
town of Butembo, under the control of the rival RCD-ML, since February.
