President Robert Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF party on Wednesday stayed away from a crisis meeting with politicians called by church leaders to discuss ways of curbing the escalating wave of violence accompanying the occupation of white-owned farms by liberation war veterans.
Reports said at least five party leaders, including Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) attended the talks.
A church leader, Griffiths Malaba, was quoted as saying: "We must work for peace and we must do so urgently before the situation deteriorates to unimaginable levels."
