Over 100 die of cholera

Local authorities in Bay region, southern Somalia, say more than 110 people have died this week of cholera, compounded by drought, AFP reported. In Ufatest commune 70 people have died, according to commune chairman Madey Mukhtar Ali, and at least 40 people in nearby Bulo Addey. According to the report, people have been weakened by a three-year drought. A WFP source said that communities had been migrating from the southern regions across borders to look for food and water in areas affected by drought and food shortages. Lack of a central government and fragile local administration made the Somalia situation more critical, and, over time had forced people into an existence of total subsistence, the source said.
