Newly displaced people continue to arrive in the central highland city of Kuito, deepening the problem for the humanitarian community trying to supply a city whose lifeline is a damaged airport runway.
Last week, 1,654 new displaced were sheltered at Catala, just outside Kuito, and were supplied with rations. But WFP has warned that it can only cover 40 percent of the planned food distribution needs in April for registered beneficiaries in the city. "The situation could provoke a serious food crisis in Kuito," a WFP report said.
UN agencies and humanitarian NGOs in Kuito "have addressed a joint letter to the Provincial Governor, expressing their concern on the negative impact the degradation of the airstrip is having on humanitarian programmes in the province" for both displaced and residents, WFP said. Rehabilitation of the
potholed runway is not expected until after the rains at the end of May.
