Genocide suspect Joseph Kanyabashi, former mayor of Ngoma in Butare prefecture, has asked the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha to set him free, the independent Hirondelle news agency has reported. Kanyabashi's lawyer told the Court last Thursday that his client's right to be tried without excessive delay had been violated and that he had been detained illegally, Hirondelle stated. Kanyabashi, whose
trial has not yet begun, was arrested in Belgium in June 1995 and detained in Arusha since January 1996, it said. The prosecution said the defence counsel's arguments were "unfounded", the report added.
