HIV information network launched

A new HIV/AIDS information network for Central and West Africa has just been launched in Abidjan, UNAIDS has said.

Known as SAFCO, (SIDA en Afrique du centre et de l'ouest), it is the first such network in French and will encourage discussion and the electronic exchange of information on issues related to HIV or AIDS in the region.

"There is a scarcity of information and technical material in French in Africa, yet this continent is the hardest hit by the virus. The creation on SAFCO will be extremely helpful in filling this information and exchange gap," said Awa Coll-Seck, a doctor and Director of Policy, Strategy and Research at the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

Some of the aims of the network include broadening the exchange of information and experiences, strengthening advocacy efforts, improving information about current projects and promoting prevention measures, UNAIDS said in its statement on Friday.
