ANC breaks silence on Zimbabwe

South Africa's ruling ANC party has spoken out about the current crisis in Zimbabwe, news reports said on Wednesday.

ANC chief whip, Tony Yengeni, was quoted as telling the national assembly that "the dispossession of the people of Zimbabwe of their land through war and trickery had been the cause of the liberation struggle". He said that Britain had a "solemn obligation" to help the Zimbabwean government in solving the current crisis.

At a media briefing ahead of his trip to the IMF and World Bank spring meeting in Washington, South African Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said that the conditions imposed on Zimbabwe by the IMF were "unbelievably difficult" and in his opinion "almost impossible to fulfil".
