Anti-Arusha protestors released

Eleven people arrested in anti-Arusha demonstrations in Bujumbura last Sunday have been released, according to local media reports. However, Netpress news agency said Leonidas Ndoricimpa, a former mayor of Bujumbura and former ambassador to Brussels, was still in detention. Ndoricimpa is vice-president of the breakaway UPRONA-legal party which accuses the ruling UPRONA of betraying Burundian Tutsis killed in violence in 1993
following the death of elected Hutu President Melchior Ndadaye by taking part in the Arusha peace process. The demonstrators had reportedly chosen the day on which Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel was visiting to show their opposition to the ongoing peace talks. Each of those released was asked to pay a fine of 20,000 Burundi francs.
