ZANU-PF supporters try to disrupt MDC rally

Police on Friday disarmed a group of about 30 followers of President Robert Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF party who allegedly tried to ambush supporters of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) on their way to a rally in Mashonaland West province, media reports said on Monday.

Wielding hoes, picks and sticks, the group reportedly tried to burn a bus carrying MDC supporters. The ZANU-PF militants reportedly put dry grass under the bus and started chanting anti-MDC slogans. The reports said that two of the ZANU-PF supporters were arrested, while the rest disappeared into nearby bush.

At the rally itself in Magunje, about 200 other ZANU-PF followers reportedly tried to disrupt the gathering - attended by about 6,000 people - by chanting and dancing towards the gathering. They were, however, confronted by MDC youths. The police intervened and the ZANU-PF supporters were forced
to retreat.
