Opposition leaders of the MDC and National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) told reporters at the weekend President Mugabe appeared to be pushing the country towards anarchy, possibly to provide an excuse to declare emergency rule and stall parliamentary elections scheduled for May.
Speaking from Washington where they are lobbying the US State Department and legislators to help step up international pressure on Mugabe's government, the opposition leaders said Zimbabwe "is drifting into chaos and the economy was threatened as a result of an orchestrated campaign of violence" by
Mugabe.
Said Gibson Sibanda, the MDC's vice-president: "We are sending out an SOS signal. The West must tell Mugabe to stop the orchestrated violence and abide by the rule of law."
