New ceasefire date set - Angola

A new ceasefire in DRC could come into effect on Friday 14 April, Angolan Defence Minister Kundi Paihama said at the weekend. The JMC meeting in Kampala had discussed and addressed the problems blocking the implementation of the Lusaka ceasefire agreement, and the date for the start of a ceasefire had been changed to 14 April, Angolan television quoted Paihama as saying. "I think the various groups are playing for time
while we confirm things," Paihama said. "They constantly mention the lack of a UN peacekeeping force but, despite there being UN approval for dispatch of a UN peacekeeping force, there are continued security problems ... I think everyone left the meeting with a more positive attitude, despite the problem which has concerned us all for quite some time - that is, the problem of guaranteeing the safety of the military commission
(JMC) in Kinshasa ... Everybody is convinced that Lusaka is too far away to monitor the situation," Paihama added.
