The Portuguese Socialist Party has demanded an apology from the Angolan government following accusations by its social communications minister against the former president and his son.
According to ‘Radio Ecclesia’, Hendrik Vaal Neto accused Mario Soares and his son Joao of being the biggest beneficiaries of Jonas Savimbi’s illegal trafficking of ivory and diamonds. His remarks were made after Mario Soares earlier condemned what he called “shocking insensitivity” of the Angolan government and the rebel movement UNITA to the people’s suffering. he also said Angola could not be considered a state of law.
President Eduardo Jose dos Santos’ spokesman reportedly said the Angolan government would not apologise to Portugal.
