Trawler owners complain of attacks by pirates

The Nigerian Trawler Owners Association (NITOA) says its members have lost close to a billion naira (about US $10 million) to attacks by pirates on fishing trawlers off coastal towns in the Niger Delta over the past year, The 'Vanguard' newspaper reported on Monday. According to the daily, NITOA President Sam Azebokhai said 35 attacks had been recorded in 1999 and eight
this year.

A recent survey shows that "over 100,000 indigenes of the region are working for the fishing industry," the newspaper quoted him as saying.
