Primary and secondary school teachers in Niger ended a four-month pay strike on Monday, three days after the government agreed to pay at least one month’s back pay, news reports stated.
Reuters reported that the government decided on Friday to release 1.8 billion francs CFA (US $2.76 million) to pay the roughly 1,800 teachers their salaries for June 1999.
However, university lecturers continued their strike, calling for the payment of at least two months salary arrears. Niger’s civil servants have frequently gone on strike to press demands for the payment of up to 12 months salary owed to them by previous administrations.
