Nine miners who were trapped more than 2 km underground in a South African gold mine were brought to the surface on Thursday night.
African Rainbow Minerals said the miners, from South Africa, Mozambique, and Swaziland were trapped by a rock fall on Monday afternoon following an earth tremor. The miners, including four who died, were working in a mine owned by African Rainbow at Orkney, 175 km southwest of Johannesburg. The agonizingly slow rescue effort captured national attention as radio stations broadcast live updates from the scene.
