Government threatens legal action against Global Witness

The Angolan government has threatened to take legal action against the London-basee NGO, Global Witness, for a report which implicates President Jose Eduardo dos Santos in alleged corrupt management of Angola's oil resources, official Angolan media reports said on Thursday. An editorial published in the daily 'Jornal de Angola' said: "The government has decided to take action against those who are responsible, in civil and criminal terms, for such unwarranted accusations, as well as against those who disseminated them." The paper did not give details of the actions planned. The Global Witness report said Dos Santos was at the centre of a group of army generals and senior government officials who have personally profited from oil exploration deals. The report also criticised international oil and banking industries, for turning a blind eye to the corruption. Oil has provided the Angolan government with an annual income of between US $1.8 billion and US $3 billion in the past nine years, it said.
