At a recent conference on economic development in Nigeria, USAID Assistant Administrator for Africa Vivian Derryck expressed optimism that Nigeria had the "capacity and financial resources to succeed," the US Information Agency reported.
Describing illiteracy rates (63 % for men, 37 % for women) as a disgrace, Derryck said that upgrading education was a top priority among USAID's development programmes in the country.
With more than half of all Nigerians unable to afford access to health care, Derryck said, USAID planned to devote more resources to family planning, fighting HIV/AIDS, and upgrading child survival.
