New party urges conditional aid grants only

Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of a new opposition party in Zimbabwe called the Movement for Democratic Change, has urged European donor governments not to grant further aid to his country unless it is conditional on good governance and respect for human rights. In an interviewed carried by the South African daily, ‘Business Day’, at the end of a European visit, Tsvangirai after meetings with Dutch, German, British and other European officials that they should get tougher with President Robert Mugabe. He cited mismanagement of the economy and the country’s military intervention in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
