The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been misled by the Zimbabwe government over millions of dollars used to bankroll the country’s military intervention in the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), news organisations reported on Monday.
Dispatches carried by the ‘BBC’ and ‘The Financial Times’ cited IMF evidence of a discrepancy between figures used internally by Zimbabwe’s finance ministry and statistics handed to the IMF by the Zimbabwe government. The reports said evidence of deliberate underestimating by Zimbabwe would threaten its IMF funding and put pressure on the Zimbabwe currency.
