Newspaper publisher detained

The publisher of a bi-weekly Angolan newspaper was detained by police at the weekend and was being held incommunicado, sources at the newspaper, ‘Folha 8’, told IRIN on Monday. They said William Toneto had been denied visits by his family and friends and that they had no news of his whereabouts or any charges against him since detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department seized him at his home on Saturday morning. News agencies said Toneto, who had been detained several times previously on charges of defamation and publishing news deemed threatening to the state, had been barred last month from leaving the country.
