The MLC, meanwhile, started its first anniversary celebrations on Thursday with a parade through its base of operations, Gbadolite, by 1,000 troops and a variety of local people. The celebrations were overseen by MLC leader Jean-Pierre Bemba and Uganda’s head of operations in the DRC, Chief of Staff Brigadier James Kazini, AFP reported. “I want to pay tribute to our valiant ally Uganda for its support and also, especially, for the training they have provided,” it quoted Bemba as saying. On Saturday, Bemba added that the MLC would not accept “criminals” associated with the regime of former dictator Mobutu Sese Seko in a newly-appointed executive committee established to administer the territory it had captured. “We can’t accept criminals in the movement, as this country needs a fundamental change,” he said.
