Niger state adopts HIV-control measures

The government of the northern state of Niger has approved four million naira (US $40,000) for the control and management of HIV, according to state-run Radio Kaduna which said the state's governor told its HIV-control committee that one million naira would be used to educate students on preventive measures. Committee Chairman Zugbae Nuhu said 550 out of 21,235 blood samples tested at the general hospital in the state capital, Minna, were HIV positive. He said 217 had developed AIDS, while 104 died of the disease. Nuhu said public enlightenment centres would be set up in secondary schools and colleges while three additional blood screening centres would be established, the radio station reported.
