Police disperse veterans

    JOHANNESBURG
    On Tuesday riot police fired teargas to disperse protesting war veterans who had besieged the ruling ZANU-PF party headquarters demanding US $13,000 each in compensation for their role in liberating the country. In 1997, the government was forced to make a Zimbabwe $2.5 billion dollar pay out to the veterans. "Nobody is sympathetic, we are fed up and we can't continue paying them," a political source in Harare told IRIN. Meanwhile, a four-day strike by municipal workers in Harare ended on Wednesday after the union agreed to continue pay negotiations with the government. The strike had severely disrupted service in the city.
