Trade negotiations

Meanwhile, trade officials from the 14-nation SADC group began meeting in Gaborone on Monday to discuss the finer points of a proposed regional free trade agreement. Media reports quoted SADC chief economist Chinge Mwila as saying that delegates would discuss in detail the issue of tariff barriers and the help that infant industries needed in order to become regionally and internationally competitive. Diplomatic sources were quoted as saying that member states were agreed on the main principles of trade liberalisation. Inter-trade between SADC nations has risen from six percent to 20 percent since the beginning of 1994.
