The SADC region is expecting a two million mt cereal shortfall this year, news reports said. Regional agricultural ministers said at a meeting in Botswana last week that heavy rains and a following dry spell were to blame, but the deficit was "no cause for alarm, since it includes nominal strategic reserve requirements." Only Malawi, Mozambique and Swaziland are expected to produce an excess of the regional maize staple.
